Corvette Racing is expanding to new horizons in 2022, with a global competition program that will see the brand compete in races on five continents. The new initiative will see Corvette Racing compete at the highest levels of sports car racing, including the FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The team will also compete in races throughout Europe, North America, and the Middle East.
"Corvette Racing has played an important role in Chevrolet's racing heritage, and we're looking forward to more success on track beginning with the 2018 season," said Mark Reuss, General Motors Executive Vice President of Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain. "Expanding our commitment to international motorsports allows us to share the excellence of Corvette with even more race fans around the world."
The new global initiative for Corvette Racing will see the brand compete in an all-new Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R race car, which is based on the sixth-generation Camaro that was introduced for the 2019 model year. The Camaro GT4.R is the worldwide race version of the upcoming Camaro ZL1 1LE performance model in late 2018.
"We're always evaluating ways to improve and expand our racing efforts," said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet U.S. Vice President of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. "Expanding into global competition with Corvette Racing allows us to showcase the all-new Camaro GT4.R and our high-performance Chevrolet products around the world."
The new global competition program for Corvette Racing will kick off in March of 2022 with the 24 Hours of Daytona race at the Daytona International Speedway in Florida. The team will compete in races throughout North America, Europe, and the Middle East. The team will also compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France, where Corvette Racing has won three class victories (2001, 2002, and 2004). When the series arrives in Europe to race at Spa-Francorchamps, Corvette Racing will be the first American brand to take on this iconic track since ALMS visited in 2011.
The global competition program for Corvette Racing culminates with the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season finale at the Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia, in November of 2022. The event will also serve as the final race of the FIA World Endurance Championship.
