This three-row mid-size SUV is now in its second generation, and several key changes for 2020 are worth noting. The V6 engine is now standard across the trim lineup. The infotainment systems and navigation feature also get an upgrade. The available options packages have been reshuffled, and buyers have more leeway in ordering stand-alone options or packages on the lower trims. This roomy, family-friendly yet functional SUV remains a solid pick in its class.
Which Trims & Features are Available for 2020?
The 2020 Chevy Traverse is offered in a total of seven trims. The base L trim comes with 18-inch wheels, cloth upholstery, smartphone app integration, a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, and a 7-inch screen display. The LS trim has a similar features list but adds second-row table mounts with dedicated USB charging. The LT Cloth version has second-row captain's chairs instead of a bench seat, and the LT Leather trim comes with full leather upholstery and is eligible for a package add-on that includes an upgraded audio system and the advanced navigation feature.
The RS trim is similarly equipped to the LT Leather trim but comes with the Premium package, and it also has exterior styling cues, 20-inch wheels, and a blacked-out grille. The Premier trim adds on a hands-free liftgate, ventilated front seats, and wireless charging. This trim can also be ordered with a sunroof. The range-topping High Country gets all of the Premier's optional equipment and a panoramic sunroof.
A Perfect Blend of Power and Fuel Efficiency
Last year's RS trim came with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, but that power source has been discontinued. All 2020 Traverse trims are powered by a 3.6L V6 rated at 310 horsepower, and that's plenty of oomph to get this big rig rolling at freeway speeds. A nine-speed automatic transmission is a standard across the trim lineup. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is optional on most trims. The High Country trim gets its own advanced all-wheel-drive system. Acceleration from a full stop to 60 mph takes just over seven seconds. The quick-shifting transmission is ideal for low-speed city driving. Steering assist at very low speeds, for example in a parking lot, is impressive.
2020 Chevrolet Traverse Safety Features
All trims are equipped with anti-lock brakes, a full set of airbags for all three rows of seating, second- and third-row child safety door locks, child seat anchors and tethers, and stability and traction control. Daytime running lights, an engine immobilizer, and a post-collision safety system are also standard. The Traverse also comes with dusk-sensing headlamps, auto delay off headlamps, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The LT Cloth and above trims can be ordered with the Driver Confidence package that adds on such goodies as forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking, side blind zone alert, and teen driver mode. This package is standard on the all-wheel-drive versions of the LS Cloth and above trims. Every Traverse also comes with a rear-view camera.
The NHTSA gave the 2020 Traverse a perfect five stars for overall crash protection including five stars for side crash protection and five stars for side barrier strength. Four stars were awarded for rollover protection.
